Have you ever heard of the term 'flying monkeys'? No, it's not a type of animal!?! So, what are flying monkeys?
During psychological discussions, particularly those revolving around narcissistic abuse, the term "flying monkeys" might seem intriguing or even bewildering to many. It certainly was to me until I had direct experience of it.
This "flying monkeys" concept, borrowed from the iconic imagery of servile minions in "The Wizard of Oz," is now a critical term to describe a particular dynamic in toxic relationships.
In this blog post I aim to completely demystify this term, explore its implications in narcissistic abuse, and provide statistics to understand its prevalence and impact.
My goal is to offer insight and knowledge in a manner that is accessible to all, shedding light on a topic that is often misunderstood or overlooked.
1. What Are Flying Monkeys, I hear you ask?
Flying monkeys are individuals who are manipulated or enlisted by a narcissist to carry out their bidding. These actions can range from spreading gossip and lies to more direct forms of harassment.
The term is rooted in the idea that these people, like the fictional flying monkeys in "The Wizard of Oz," are unwittingly serving the Wicked Witch (in this case, the narcissist) without clearly understanding the harm they're contributing to.
They become tools in the narcissist's arsenal, used to extend their control and manipulation beyond their immediate reach.
My clients and I have usually had experience with this. It could even be their parents who believe their Narcissist chat or an ex-partner - the mind boggles with who it can be, and quite often, it is the last person you thought could turn against you.

The Role of Flying Monkeys in Narcissistic Abuse
Narcissistic abuse is typically characterised by a pattern of behaviour that seeks to manipulate, degrade, and exert control over another person.
Understanding what are flying monkeys is important because flying monkeys play a crucial role in this process by acting as the narcissist's proxies.
They might spread misinformation, isolate the victim from their support network, or convince others that the victim is the perpetrator.
This serves to amplify the narcissist's influence, making it harder for the victim to find support or escape the abusive situation.
Often, they spread untruths about a situation; AHA, I've had that! And the 'friend' believes their false stories and sides with the narcissist, increasing your bewilderment and making you question what the truth is.

Statistical Insights into Narcissistic Abuse and Flying Monkeys
Quantifying the prevalence of flying monkeys in narcissistic abuse is challenging due to the covert nature of these dynamics. However, studies on narcissism and its impact offer some insights.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, approximately 6% of the population has narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). While not all individuals with NPD employ flying monkeys, the manipulation tactics associated with NPD suggest a significant number might.
Further, research published in the Journal of Family Violence indicates that victims of narcissistic abuse often report feeling isolated, a symptom likely exacerbated by the actions of flying monkeys.
4. What are Flying Monkeys?
Recognising and Dealing with Flying Monkeys
Recognising flying monkeys involves observing their actions and understanding their origin. Often, these individuals may not realise they are being used as tools for abuse. Key signs include:
Sudden changes in behaviour towards you.
Spreading unverified information.
Third parties initiated an increase in confrontations.
Dealing with flying monkeys requires a strategic approach. First, it's essential to establish boundaries and limit their access to your personal life.
Communicating directly and assertively can also clarify misunderstandings. In some cases, distancing yourself from these individuals entirely is necessary to protect your mental health.
I've personally had to cut myself off from these people when I was going through this, and my mind health improved almost immediately. I promise it could be for you too!
5. What are Flying Monkeys?
Psychological Impact of Being a Flying Monkey
Interestingly, the individuals who serve as flying monkeys may also suffer psychological effects. Unknowingly participating in the harm of another can lead to guilt, confusion, and a sense of betrayal once the truth comes to light.
This emphasises the need for a broader understanding and education on the signs of manipulation and narcissistic tactics, not only to protect potential victims but also those who might unknowingly become perpetrators of harm.

Strategies for Recovery and Support
For those who have been on the receiving end of narcissistic abuse, recovery involves several key steps.
Recognising the situation and understanding that the abuse is not a reflection of one's worth is crucial. Seeking support from professionals who understand the dynamics of narcissistic abuse can provide the tools needed to navigate complex emotions and rebuild self-esteem.
Equally important is the role of community and support networks. Whether online or in-person, support groups such as my private Facebook Group here (LINK) can offer a sense of solidarity and understanding vital for healing.
These communities also serve as a resource for strategies to rebuild one's life after abuse, emphasising the importance of reconnecting with one's sense of self and establishing healthy boundaries.
7. What are Flying Monkeys?
Raising Awareness and Education
One of the most potent tools against narcissistic abuse and the manipulation of flying monkeys is education and awareness.
By bringing these discussions into the open, we can challenge the stigma and silence that often surround such abuse.
Education can empower individuals to recognise the signs of manipulation, both in their relationships and potentially within themselves, preventing the cycle of abuse from continuing.
8. What are Flying Monkeys?

The Invisible Threads of Control
The phenomenon of flying monkeys in narcissistic abuse highlights the complex and often invisible ways in which control and manipulation can permeate relationships.
Understanding this concept is crucial for recognising the signs of such abuse and taking steps to protect oneself.
While the statistics provide a glimpse into the prevalence of narcissistic behaviour, each individual's experience is unique, underscoring the importance of awareness and support in combatting these toxic dynamics.
Flying monkeys are not just a relic of fiction but a harsh reality for many facing narcissistic abuse. By discussing and shedding light on this topic, I aim to empower individuals to recognise and navigate these challenging situations more effectively.
Knowledge is power, and understanding the mechanisms of manipulation is the first step toward liberation and healing.
AMEN.
What are Flying Monkeys? Conclusion
