The emotional attachment, shared memories, and the hope for change can make it seem almost impossible to walk away. Staying in a toxic relationship can have drastic consequences for your mental health as well as your physical health.

Toxic relationships can lead to depression as well as anxiety, and even chronic health issues due to the constant stress and emotional turmoil.

The first step is recognizing and admitting that the relationship is toxic. Denial can keep you stuck in a cycle of abuse. Take an honest look at the patterns of behaviour in your relationship.


Are you consistently unhappy? Do you feel drained after interactions? Are your needs and feelings constantly dismissed?


This is a big one. My parents (luckily for me) reinforced this for me every step along the way.


I used to say,' But he's being nice to me today.' My mum said,' That's not normal, Liv. Relationships are highs and lows, but knowing who we are with is a big one.'


She meant that I was married to Jekyll and Hyde and never knew who was coming home at night. That's NOT normal!


2. Seek Support


Isolation can make it difficult to leave a toxic relationship. Reach out to trusted friends, family members, or support groups. According to the American Psychological Association, social support is absolutely crucial in helping individuals recover from toxic relationships.


Joining a support group or seeking therapy from someone like myself, can provide a safe space to express your feelings and gain perspective.


My doctor suggested a support group, which I resisted because I thought I wouldn't 'fit in'. When I went, it was incredible. There were women just like me, and I learned to move on and stay safe. Honestly, do it if you can. This was free.


3. Create a Safety Plan


Leaving a toxic relationship can sometimes be dangerous. If your partner has exhibited controlling or abusive behaviours, it's essential to have a safety plan in place.


This might include finding a temporary place to stay, keeping emergency numbers handy, and having a trusted friend or family member on call.


4. Set Boundaries


Establish clear boundaries to ensure you protect yourself emotionally and physically. Communicate your decision to end the relationship with authority and firmly without ambiguity.


Avoid situations where you might be alone with your partner if you feel unsafe. Remember, boundaries are essential for your healing process.
